Wasco will lead operations, sales, go-to-market strategy, distribution and product management for this important business line.

Wasco will report to Aaron Seurkamp, SVP and President, Protection & Retirement Division, who is taking on expanded responsibility in overseeing this business. Since the acquisition of ShelterPoint Life Insurance Company (ShelterPoint) 1 in November 2024, Employee Benefits has played a key role in the Protective’s growth strategy, diversifying its product portfolio and opening doors to new market opportunities. This change is an important milestone in the continued integration of ShelterPoint into Protective and reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to positioning Employee Benefits for long-term success.

“Jeff has demonstrated strong leadership and strategic vision. His deep industry experience and proven ability to drive results make him the right leader to guide Employee Benefits through its next phase of growth,” said Seurkamp. “The mission of our Employee Benefits business line aligns well with Protective’s life and health offerings, reinforcing our shared commitment to delivering comprehensive, reliable coverage. We are excited about the future of this business.”

Wasco has led sales, product and distribution for the Employee Benefits business since 2024. He brings over 20 years of group benefits experience, including a variety of leadership roles at Guardian Life, driving focus on strategic growth initiatives. His industry knowledge and operational expertise position him well to lead Employee Benefits as it strengthens its foundation in New York and expands nationally.

ShelterPoint was recently approved as a private plan provider for Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) coverage in Minnesota, Delaware and Maine. This strategic expansion supports Protective’s commitment to investing in employee benefits and positions the company to help employers navigate evolving statutory benefit requirements. Minnesota, Delaware and Maine join a growing number of states implementing PFML programs, and ShelterPoint’s early market entry enables Protective to support businesses ahead of each state’s coverage mandates, which begin as early as January 1, 2026.

Garden City, April 9, 2024 – ShelterPoint Group, Inc., holding company of ShelterPoint Life Insurance Company and its wholly-owned subsidiary, ShelterPoint Insurance Company (together “ShelterPoint”), agreed to be acquired by Protective Life Insurance Company, the primary subsidiary of Protective Life Corporation (together “Protective”). Protective, the U.S. subsidiary of Dai-ichi Life Holdings, Inc. (“Dai-ichi”; TSE:8750), provides life insurance, annuity and asset protection solutions to more than 14.4 million people.

ShelterPoint and Protective are both committed to helping people achieve protection when they need it most – something ShelterPoint has been providing for over 50 years in New York as a leader in statutory Short-Term Disability insurance (“DBL”)2; and, in more recent years, in the form of New York’s state-mandated Paid Family Leave insurance (“PFL”)2 as well as Paid Family and Medical Leave insurance in other states.

“As more states are requiring Paid Family and Medical Leave insurance, we’re excited to receive the strong support of Protective on our path to making this essential benefit available in a growing number of states,” said Rich White, Executive Chairman of the Board of ShelterPoint.

“This transaction will ring in and accelerate an inspiring new chapter for our company,” adds Leston Welsh, CEO of ShelterPoint. “At the same time, this transaction is expected to empower ShelterPoint to even further enhance its longstanding DBL/PFL capabilities2 that customers have come to trust and rely on when needing to take leave.”

“On our continued journey to grow our business and serve more people, we are thrilled to add new services to our portfolio through the acquisition of ShelterPoint,” said Rich Bielen, President & CEO of Protective. “We look forward to welcoming ShelterPoint’s customers and the company’s talented teammates to Protective upon closing.”

Once closed, the transaction will mark Protective’s 60th acquisition and the seventh deal completed since Protective became part of Tokyo-based Dai‑ichi in 2015. Dai-ichi, a global leader with over $437 billion in total assets, as of Sept. 30, 2023, serves customers in 10 countries.

The transaction is expected to close before the end of the year, pending regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions. Until the closing, both businesses will maintain separate operations.

Serving as external legal counsel for Protective were Kirkland & Ellis LLP and Maynard Nexsen. ShelterPoint is a portfolio company of Eos Partners and its affiliates, a New York based private investment firm. ShelterPoint was represented by Winston & Strawn LLP and Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP. Financial advisors for this deal included Fenchurch Advisory Partners US LP for Protective and Goldman Sachs & Co. LLC for ShelterPoint.

Garden City, New York, January 26, 2018 – ShelterPoint Life Insurance Company (“ShelterPoint Life”), New York’s largest statutory disability (DBL) insurance carrier1 received the “Insurance Team of the Year” award issued by Insurance Advocate magazine on Thursday, January 25th, 2018. This is in recognition of ShelterPoint Life’s extraordinary preparation, education, and communication of NY Paid Family Leave (PFL) throughout 2017. Steve Acunto, Publisher of Insurance Advocate, explains, “ShelterPoint’s achievements in proactive, educational outreach have affected the community most favorably. This new law would have otherwise created disruption for the producer community, employers, and employees in New York State, were it not for ShelterPoint’s intelligent, careful approach to the implementation of the new law.”

Each year Insurance Advocate cites a company, person, or other leader who has distinguished themselves in service to the insurance industry itself and, by extension, the insuring public.

Richard White, CEO of ShelterPoint Life, notes, “I am very proud of what we have accomplished as a team in regards to PFL thus far, and this is reflected in our recognition by the Insurance Advocate. While our 18-month build-up is winding down and all systems are a GO, this is just the beginning of PFL for New Yorkers. My sincere thanks to our PFL team for their tireless work to implement PFL and make this happen for the hundreds of New Yorkers who have already submitted a first claim to ShelterPoint. I also want to express my appreciation to the Department of Financial Services and the Workers’ Compensation Board for their hard work and cooperation in working with insurance carriers and employers during the critical Paid Family Leave roll-out stage.”

The award was officially presented to ShelterPoint Life during an awards luncheon with select industry representatives at The Carltun at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Additionally, ShelterPoint Life received a Certificate of Recognition from New York Senator Todd Kaminsky for its outstanding service to the community with respect to Paid Family Leave awareness and education.
