Remembering the true spirt of the holiday season, ShelterPoint employees collectively donated over 89 toys to help brighten the holidays for sick kids and children-in-need on Long Island through the John Theissen Annual Toy and Fund Holiday Drive.

A ShelterPoint tradition 8 years running

The John Theissen Children’s Foundation is a local charity on Long Island near and dear to our hearts. When we began working with the John Theissen’s Children Foundation eight years ago, we did not realize it would become an annual tradition for us. But it has become a passion for us, a way to bring joy and give back to our local community during the holiday season. Through the years we have collected hundreds of toys since we began in 2012! 

How the John Theissen Children’s Foundation helps

The toy drive helps parents who feel financial strains, but want to provide gifts to their children for the holidays.  The JCTF.org enables us to reach those families, and help.

John Theissen has been running this toy drive and other charitable giving events throughout the year since 1992, when he collected over 800 toys.  Last year, the John Theissen Children’s Fund provided over 81,000 toys and gift cards for children.

What better reason is there to gather together with a little food and fun than to help patients fighting to beat cancer!

Tempting cakes, pies, cupcakes, donuts and cookies enticed our fellow coworkers to forgo their diets for a day, and enjoy some homemade treats - all for the benefit of The American Cancer Society (ACS)!

Cancer hits close to home for many people, and The American Cancer Society does a lot of good for them.  Did you know that the ACS has invested over $4.9 billion in cancer research since 1946, arranged 8.5 million free rides to treatment, given over 450,000 free places to stay nearby hospitals in 2017 alone, and in the span of one year supported over 1.34 million people through a live chat and 24/7 helpline?

From just the bake sale, we raised over $760.50.  Thanks to all who took part in the event – both baking and buying!

As honoree and tournament sponsor of the Suffolk Big-I’s 2019 annual golf outing, we’d like to invite our brokers to bring their best golf swing out to the Huntington Country Club on Monday, August 19^th for a fun day of golfing for a worthy cause.  The Suffolk Big-I is hosting the event to help develop the next generation of insurers, agents & brokers through the Independent Agents and Brokers Foundation (IABF), for the Insurance Chair Endowment Fund at Stony Brook University College of Business.

“25-30% of insurance professionals are set to retire in three years and only 4% of millennials have expressed an interest in insurance careers?" (Source: IAB-foundation.org)

The IABF believes this breakdown can be linked to the lack of insurance courses or a degreed program on Long Island.  This golf outing will contribute to the IABF’s $1.5 million fundraising goal to establish an Endowed Chair of Insurance and Risk Management at Stony Brook.

This year’s event promises to be a great opportunity to come together for a great golf game, sun, food and fun!  Join us for Shotgun Tee Off: “Scramble” Format at 11:00AM.  Registration/brunch starts at 9:30AM.

May is National Pet Month!

This makes Spring the perfect time to celebrate our animal buddies!  And, to help make a meaningful difference in the lives of shelter pets, our employees organized donations for our local animal shelter in the Town of Hempstead, including:

We collected donations  in each of our office locations and  presented them to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter on May 22^nd during a special event held at our home office in Garden City.  ­­­

During this event, volunteers from the animal shelter talked about the benefits of animal adoption, the shelter's activities to benefit homeless animals, their pet therapy wellness center, volunteer opportunities, and pet health. But the best part of the event were the VIP guests who came to our office, two therapy dogs, Cooper & Dino!

Leading up to the event, our employees took part in a month-long journey of learning about each other’s animal companions with a daily photo of a ShelterPoint employee’s family pet featured on our internal site.  Check out the gallery below for a peek at some of those furry family members!

John Thiessen and his organization helps sick and injured children and their families in their time of need.  In addition to the work John and his team do to provide hospitals and child-care facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, the Foundation also sponsors an annual Toy Drive during the Christmas holiday season for underserved children who are confined to a hospital over the holidays.  We are pleased to announce that, as part of our Social Responsiblity work, our employees donated over 140 toys to the 2018 27th Annual Toy and Fund drive - a new record!

We hope that children receiving these gifts will feel as joyful as we who contributed!  Happy holidays! 

Annual Fundraiser Series For The American Cancer Society

Year after year, we have helped The American Cancer Society (ACS) in their efforts to prevent and beat breast cancer.  This year we contributed to The American Cancer as a whole and not solely breast cancer, since virtually everyone is touched by someone with this disease.

This year, we held a bake sale, a raffle, a silent auction and an outing to raise donations to assist the ACS' efforts to find a cure.  Many of our employees took part in these events and, in total, we raised:

$4,605!

Our team is already working on how to beat it next year!

3rd Annual School Supply Drive

ShelterPoint joins the John Thiessen Children's Foundation (JTCF) once again for their annual back-to-school drive.  ShelterPoint employees made donations to the JTCF to provide backpack care packages for underprivileged children on Long Island.  We feel it is our responsibility to help make a difference in a child's life and what can be more appropriate - giving them a fresh start at the beginning of a school year!

All children from kindergarten through high school receive a full set of clothes for the first day of school along with a backpack filled with school supplies, including spiral notebooks, pencils and pens and other items needed for the classroom.

We are pleased to be an ongoing partner to the John Thiessen Children's Foundation for their outstanding work in serving sick, injured and underprivileged children.

Our Employees Pitch In After Natural Disasters

The United States has been hit hard with several hurricanes this year, and we decided to use our annual fundraising to help families affected by hurricanes in southeast Texas, Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.  Two of the charities that we are working with are The American Red Cross and The Best Friends Animal Society.

Our employees got together and ran a bake sale, raffle and donated to each of these causes.  The first charity is The American Red Cross, which is using donor dollars to provide disaster relief such as shelter, food, comfort and emergency support for individuals and families affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.  While the hurricanes have ended, the American Red Cross' work in helping its victims is just beginning.   We have made donations to help people recover and get back on their feet in the challenging weeks and months ahead.

The second charity which is loosely related to relieving families in the face of natural disasters is The Best Friends Animal Society.  Like the American Red Cross, the Best Friends Animal Society is helping families following natural disasters, but is focused on reuniting pets with families in the aftermath of these hurricanes.  In addition, Best Friends helps animals turned in to shelters to find homes, and help local area rescue groups and shelters rebuild and recover.  Notably, Best Friends is the only national animal welfare organization focused on ending the killing of dogs and cats in America's shelters - which all our animal loving employees are proud to support!

We appreciate the contribution of over $700 our employees have raised to help out these organizations in their work.  Thanks for the baking donations, raffle participants, sweet tooth, and passion for making a difference!

ShelterPoint Makes Strides Against Breast Cancer

Whether we've faced it ourselves, or someone we love has, almost everyone has been affected by breast cancer in some way.  At the same time, we can all do something about it.

Last weekend, Team ShelterPoint continued its annual tradition of getting out there to take part in the American Cancer Society’s Annual Breast Cancer Walk on Jones Beach.  Those who donated to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is helping the American Cancer Society impact women with the disease, survivors and families in so many ways, from funding innovative breast cancer research to simply providing a hand to hold.

Employees raised $3,100 in donations with this year's fundraisers.  We thank the ShelterPoint Team, and their friends and family who made this event such a success!

Annual Walk for Breast Cancer

Following a long tradition of walking for a breast cancer cure, ShelterPoint employees once again took a walk on Sunday on Jones Beach in Long Island, New York to help prevent cancer and save lives.  United with a desire to have an impact on this deadly disease, ShelterPoint and their employees have been taking part in this worthy cause for almost a decade.  Tens of thousands of dollars have been raised by ShelterPoint to date, and this year's contribution did not disappoint.  Our team raised over $7,570 in donations! 

On the beach walk, it was heartening looking at the various fence pickets with the survivors names pinned on them amidst all the supporters - evidence that, collectively, we are making a difference in battling breast cancer.

We will continue to lend support to The American Cancer Society and the great work they do in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
