For fathers, life can be full of both difficult and triumphant moments — from the early days of figuring out diaper duty and late-night feedings to one day allowing grown children to help care for them. It's all about the full circle of fatherhood — how it evolves, how it challenges us, and how it connects us across generations. Stories from fathers and from those caring for their aging parents provide honest, heartfelt glimpses into what it means to show up as a dad and for a dad.

First Steps into Parenthood

There’s nothing quite like the beginning of fatherhood — the quiet, chaotic, heart-bursting moments that mark the start of a new life and a new chapter. In those first few weeks, time bends and blurs as sleepless nights meet unforgettable firsts.

“Having your first child is world-rocking,” said Kyle. Though Kyle works in a state that does not require Paid Family & Medical Leave as a statutory benefit, he had access to parental leave provided privately by his employer. He was grateful to be able to step away, stating that it was essential. “I think no matter how many kids you have, [taking time away from work] is needed. Especially after my wife had a c-section. She had to take it easy for at least a couple weeks, so being able to help, that's huge.

Tim, who owns his own business, juggled his schedule and didn’t have to formally take time off to be sure he could be home for the first weeks of his child’s life. “One afternoon, [my daughter] fell asleep on my chest while I was reading, and I just stayed there for hours. Nothing urgent, no clock ticking. I got to just be there. You can’t schedule that. But not every day was magical — some days were just hard.”

As father of three, Kyle also reflected on how those first weeks can be challenging. “[With more kids], whether you have 200 or two, [those early weeks] can be incredibly difficult. You're in a hospital for a week. You get back home, and you're just dragging. You're not sleeping. You're not taking care of yourself. You're taking care of a baby. You’re not good for a few weeks. It's just the way it is.”

“It’s not a vacation,” Tim said of the time he spent away from work. “Look, those six weeks were probably the most emotionally challenging and rewarding time I’ve had in recent memory. [But] it gave me a chance to just be ‘Dad’ without a calendar full of meetings.”

Tim and Kyle also reflected on their return to work. Kyle reflected on balancing life and work. “You can't separate work from family life. You just can’t. When you're at work, you are still a parent,” he said. “When you're home, you try to leave work at work, but it's even harder to separate family from work when you're at work. You're a dad or you're a mom 24 hours a day. You don't clock in for that. You're just always accountable for that job.”

“I came back [to work] a little more grounded, more patient.” Tim said, reflecting on his own return to the office. “I was a bit out of rhythm the first week or so, but I had a new sense of purpose.”

Caring for a Parent

Elder care is often an unpredictable journey — helping a parent through recovery, being there for a loved one’s diagnosis and when it matters most. For many adult children, the responsibility of caring for a parent during a major health crisis comes with both love and stress.

My grandparents were my parents,” Cindy explained. “My parents were always working, and these people were the backbones of our home. My grandfather was an agriculturist. He could tell you everything about every tree. I picked that up from him, and we would garden every single year, right here on Long Island. I have eggplants that grow in my yard until the end of Christmas every single year, for the past 20 years

As an employee of ShelterPoint, working in New York, Cindy had access to statutory benefits like New York DBL and PFL, and she was able to take time to care for her grandfather when he became very ill. When you know someone your whole life, to watch how they decline — especially when it's somebody who takes themselves to the doctor, takes their medication, does the right thing for themselves — it's never easy to watch.”

Laura was also a caregiver for a loved one, her father. “My dad taught me to be honest, to have a good work ethic, and just always look on the bright side,” Laura said of her father. “I remember as a child — those electric bikes. We called it a moped. My dad took me for a ride, and we found a wallet lying on the ground. He looked and saw there was a driver's license that had the address. We took the wallet back to the guy.”

When her father faced a severe diagnosis, Laura wanted to be there for him. “One of my dad’s lines was ‘every day's a good day, just some days are better than others.’ He would try to remain positive, and he used a lot of humor,” Laura said. “My dad had humor. And we tried to do the same for him, to be positive and keep a sense of humor.”

Cindy reflected on how she balanced caring for her grandfather and managing her other responsibilities. “You keep going,” she said of her determination to be there for her grandfather through his illness. “That's how life is. You’ve just got to keep going. You can't stop."

During her father’s ongoing illness, Laura often felt torn between wanting to be by her father’s side and tending to her other responsibilities. While she didn’t have access to statutory Paid Family and Medical Leave in her state, she did have intermittent leave through FMLA, as her husband was also battling a severe illness at the same time. “You’re thinking about how you can do the right thing. If you're at work, you're thinking, ‘well I should be off,’ or feeling it should be you taking them to the appointment and being there to help answer and hear about treatment.”

The stories shared by Cindy and Laura reflect similar stories of caregivers stepping up to be there for their loved ones. Cindy’s work at ShelterPoint also allowed her to hear the stories of many grown children who are now caring for their elderly parents. She spoke of a poignant conversation with a woman who has just lost her mother and was currently caring for her father. These are my fellow humans,” she said, “and we all share similar stories."

Celebrating and Supporting Parents

As we pause to celebrate and honor parents during this season of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, we’re reminded of the many forms that love and care can take — whether welcoming a new child or supporting an aging parent. The stories shared above serve as a tribute to the strength, vulnerability, and commitment that define caregiving across generations.

These moments — big and small, joyful and challenging — reflect the heart of what it means to show up for family.

At ShelterPoint, we recognize the importance of being there when it matters most. In many states with statutory benefits, we provide Paid Family & Medical Leave (PFML) to support working individuals who need time to care for loved ones, whether at the start of life or during times of need later on. It’s one small way we contribute to helping families navigate life’s most meaningful transitions.

To learn more about PFML and how it supports families and caregivers, explore our PFML resources, or signing up for updates.

Note: Unless otherwise noted, most participants of our Moments that Matter campaign celebrating Mother’s Day and Father’s Day did not work in states with statutory Paid Family and Medical Leave benefits.

[paragraphspace]

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, we’re taking time to honor the incredible strength, resilience, and love that mothers bring to their families every day. We spoke with moms from across the country who generously shared their stories — welcoming new babies, navigating recovery, and embracing those unforgettable early days of parenthood.

Debuting a New Addition to the Family

Welcoming a new child is one of life’s most profound experiences. Whether through birth or adoption, those first days and weeks are filled with moments that provide the first glimpses of a lifelong bond beginning to form.

There is a lot of learning and growing in those first weeks, even for parents who have older children. Megan and her husband are raising three children, a preteen and two preschoolers. Of those early days after each of her children was born, she said, “It’s all a blur. We just had to figure it out, because every kid is different.”

As Megan thought about her youngest child’s birth, she laughed at the idea that two older children had prepared her and her husband for a third. “Unlike my first two children, my youngest was a ‘velcro’ baby, who wanted to be held constantly. She only slept when someone held her,” she explained. “Eventually, I noticed she liked motion. She would sleep if she was in a swing. It was a relief when we figured out what she needed, and that’s a win for a parent when you’re getting to know your new baby.”

Jesibeth, a New York mom with three children of her own, also highlighted how those small moments of triumph are precious to mothers. “Watching them change every day — like they say, kids grow like string beans. It is absolutely true. They do, especially when they’re that small,” Jesibeth said, reflecting on the early days she spent bonding with her children. “As a single mother, I appreciated [taking that time to bond] because it allowed me to have a deeper connection with my children and also created an opportunity for me to create that healthy balance for when I did return to work.”

After the birth of her first child, Amaris appreciated the small moments of bonding as a growing family. “There are good memories,” she said. “We would have our little routine where we’d watch The U, [a local Chicago TV channel], and then put the baby down at about nine. Then, all three of us would wake up at eleven or midnight. The baby would eat. Then, we’d put him back to bed, and we would go to sleep. Maybe he’d wake up again in the middle of the night, and we’d get up again. But it was nice, being together as a family.”

Being There When It Matters Most

The beginning of motherhood is often filled with joyful, unforgettable moments. But as many moms will admit, these days are rarely perfect. The challenges parents face can be profoundly real, and learning to adapt to the less than ideal moments can shape families forever.

Just weeks after Amaris and her husband welcomed their second child, a daughter, they found themselves back in the emergency room. Their daughter “wasn’t keeping anything down and was incredibly dehydrated.” Amaris said, “[The doctors had] to use an NG tube for our daughter, because they couldn’t get an IV. I couldn’t even nurse her at the time. I would sleep at the hospital to be with her.”

Megan also remembered a time when she took one of her children to the hospital at just a few months old. Eventually, the doctors decided she needed to be transferred to a more specialized hospital nearby. “My baby was in her car seat with an oxygen mask on her little face,” Megan said, as she recalled waiting for the ambulance to arrive and transport them between the two hospitals.

Both Amaris and Megan were able to bring their daughters home after a few days in the hospital. Challenges like what they experienced as they cared for their sick children are common among parents, even if the specific circumstances are different. Parenthood can bring a lot of unique hurdles and stresses, but every mom we talked to also shared how they find ways to overcome these challenges and keep a positive outlook.

Jesibeth reflected on some of the trickier moments she faced when her children were young. “It was challenging putting the baby on the schedule and things of that nature, but I don’t let certain things create negative experiences for me,” she explained. “I always like to find the positive aspect of every challenge that I face. And in that case, it was being a new mother, waking up earlier than normal to set preparations to ensure that my daughter had everything she needed.”

While noting that some days can bring struggle or anxiety, Megan reflected on how far her family and her children have come over the years. “What's been really interesting about my experience is having a child who just turned 13, who was eight when [my first daughter] was born. I was seeing one child as a baby and then reflecting back on how my oldest was at that age, seeing how he's growing, what kind of kid he is, and what kind of person I hope he's going to be.”

ShelterPoint Is There for Parents

ShelterPoint is about helping families during the moments that matter. That’s why we’re so dedicated to offering benefits like Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML), which can support families through some of life’s major highs and lows.

Every year, many states consider adopting PFML programs to give more mothers the support they need to care for their families, such as providing bonding leave to welcome a new child or parental leave so parents can be there when it matter most. As of 2025, over a dozen states have passed laws to mandate Paid Family and Medical Leave programs, and many other states have implemented voluntary paid leave programs or programs that provide paid leave for government employees.

At ShelterPoint, PFML is what we do. As more states pass legislation and existing programs get refined to address new challenges, you can stay informed about PFML by signing up for updates or exploring our PFML resources.

Life is filled with defining moments — welcoming a new baby, caring for a loved one in crisis, or navigating a personal health challenge. These are times when being present isn't just important; it's essential. But too often, work obligations can make it difficult for families to be there when it matters most.

That’s where Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) comes in. PFML can provide employees with the time and financial support they need to step away from work and focus on what truly counts — health, family, and recovery.

Bonding Leave

One of the primary reasons many take advantage of Paid Family and Medical Leave is to bond with a new child. When a child is born to new parents or when a family grows by adoption, parents often take time away from work to spend time with the newest addition.

Balancing work and family life is a challenge for many parents, especially during pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and the early days of parenthood. Paid Family and Medical Leave can play a role in supporting parents’ health and financial stability.

For mothers, having adequate recovery time after childbirth is essential for helping to prevent postpartum complications such as infections, depression, and long-term health issues. A 2024 study found that state Paid Family and Medical Leave significantly reduced the risk of postpartum depression and improved maternal mental health overall. By evaluating data from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System across 43 states, the researchers also found that mothers in states with strong family and medical leave programs were more likely to breastfeed successfully and receive postpartum medical care.

Paid parental leave can also have positive impacts in the workplace. In 2023, researchers evaluated dozens of studies that documented the effects of paid parental leave, and ultimately they concluded that paid leave policies increased employee morale, engagement, and retention. A McKinsey study reported that fathers who take leave are more likely to return to work and stay longer with their employer.

Caregiver Leave

Paid Family and Medical Leave is also there for families in life’s more difficult moments. While bonding leave is a wonderful reason to step away from work and focus on family, PFML can also offer support for employees who need to take time away from work to care for a sick family member.

PFML can be beneficial for caregivers of family members with serious health conditions that may come with aging, as it can enable them to provide essential care without sacrificing their financial stability. A study published in the Gerontological Society of America’s Innovation in Aging found that access to PFML allows family caregivers to spend more time assisting older relatives, which is crucial during medical recovery or rehabilitation. This support can help caregivers focus on their loved ones without the added stress of lost income.

Additionally, research by UsAgainstAlzheimer’s indicates that 55% of employed dementia caregivers reported that access to Paid Family and Medical Leave improved their emotional well-being, highlighting the positive impact of paid leave on both caregivers and those they care for.

These findings underscore how PFML might play a part in supporting caregivers, ensuring they can fulfill their caregiving responsibilities while maintaining their own health and financial security.

Being There for Families When It Matters Most

When life throws us a curveball or reaches a joyful milestone, the last thing anyone should worry about is whether they can afford to take time off work. Paid Family and Medical Leave empowers individuals to prioritize their health and their loved ones without sacrificing their financial stability.

over a dozen states have enacted laws mandating PFML, while many others offer voluntary programs or provide paid leave benefits for public employees.

At ShelterPoint, PFML is at the heart of what we do. These programs help support working families, whether it’s welcoming a new child or caring for someone during a health crisis. Because ultimately, being there — for the hard days, the healing days, and the heartwarming ones — makes all the difference.

As more states advance PFML legislation and existing programs evolve, you can stay informed by signing up for updates here or exploring our comprehensive PFML resources.

As most of us can’t do our jobs the way we used to, and schools have closed to help “flatten the curve” of COVID-19, our lives are far from normal: juggling home office, home schooling, and domestic duties pose challenges none of us were prepared for.

Like some of you, many of us at ShelterPoint have kids home with us now, too; all while answering your calls, processing your claims, and writing the information for our COVID-19 Resource Center. Being able to keep our commitment to you amidst these unprecedented circumstances made us wonder how we can help not just our own employees but other working moms and dads as well. We’re sure that you, just like us, welcome ideas how to keep our kids occupied with positive and meaningful activities.

Meaningful activities to help them find a creative outlet and inspiration, focus on the good in these challenging times, all while giving them a way to express their gratitude for those who work so selflessly on the frontlines or send someone a virtual hug. This is when our idea for coloring pages was born. Coloring pages are nothing groundbreaking, but the impact you can have with them may very well be. Our hope is that our inspirational coloring pages provide you and your families with a positive creative outlet in this time of uncertainty, while sparking some social goodwill around you:

As the situation surrounding COVID-19 (the illness caused by the novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2) continues to evolve, we are sharing this update on ShelterPoint’s preparedness and precautionary measures we are taking. On a high level, these include employees working remotely and servicing our customers while keeping our employees safe. We have a dedicated team monitoring the constantly evolving information closely to assure our business continuity plan is functioning effectively. As of now, ShelterPoint has taken the following preventive steps:

ShelterPoint’s Commitment to our Clients

Keeping our commitment to our customers remains a priority during the COVID-19 outbreak. Some of the steps we have taken to mitigate potential impact on processing and paying claims, answering questions, and providing information, include:

Cross-training staff on critical functions to help to minimize service interruptions or delays.

Identify critical priority functions and shift resources to support these areas.

Testing technology to ensure we are able to shift critical tasks as needed.

Continuous pandemic planning that accounts for different variables and scenarios, such as increase in claim volume or closure of our buildings.

Protecting ShelterPoint Employees

The health and safety of our employees is very important to us. We have already put into place social distancing steps to reduce staff density in our offices and thereby help minimize COVID-19 exposure to our employees. This includes:

Suspending business travel and attendance at conferences or similar large events.

Limiting in-person meetings with our brokers and clients wherever possible.

Requiring employees who return from certain travel to work from home and “self-quarantine” for at least 2 weeks.

Enabling and directing a growing number of employees to work from home.

We have deployed technological capabilities to facilitate an increasing number of employees to work remotely.

Implementing enhanced workspace cleaning to help limit the spread of germs for those who currently remain in the office.

As the situation evolves, we are prepared to add additional protective measures.

Garden City, NY, May 15, 2019 – Industry leaders Richard White, CEO of ShelterPoint Life Insurance Company (ShelterPoint) and Mary Griffin, President and CEO of the Life Insurance Council of New York (LICONY), together with over 400 valued clients, partners, employees and friends in a virtual ‘who’s who’ in the insurance industry, raised over $560,000 at a tribute scholarship dinner on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, for the College of Mount Saint Vincent’s scholarship and financial aid initiatives.

A program close to Richard White’s heart is the College’s Mott Street Scholarship Program which helps gifted students who have experienced homelessness or persisted through foster care. This scholarship program covers tuition, year-round room and board, fees, books, a computer, and insurance.

Mr. White and Ms. Griffin were honored at the gala for their “strength of character, leadership, business acumen, and devotion to the common good.”

Mr. White attributes this recognition to his entire team at ShelterPoint for the New York Paid Family Leave program: “My associates and I decided to take the lead in educating the New York community about Paid Family Leave, and working hand-in-hand with government to implement this new mandated benefit. Tremendous thanks to my wonderful, hard-working and smart team of associates from ShelterPoint for making this honor possible.”

The theme of support was woven throughout Mr. White’s remarks “…Think of the teenagers who are homeless, in foster care…Through the Mott Street Scholarship Program, Mount Saint Vincent becomes the family these kids needed to get the support – that we all need – to get a great education, to have a start at a successful life.”

Mr. White has almost 35 years of experience in creating and implementing effective strategies for business growth, diversification, product development, sales expansion, and operational excellence for several leading insurance companies, including Pan American Life Insurance Company, The Guardian Life Insurance Company, and New York Life Insurance Company. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of The Insurance Federation of New York (IFNY), and a member of the Board of Directors of LICONY.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of Emilio Miret’s passing on September 24, 2018. He was a staple in the NY insurance industry: well known, well respected, and loved. Emilio started in the industry in the early 1960s and spent his last 14 years in the workforce at ShelterPoint until his retirement in 2011. During his time at ShelterPoint, Emilio played a major role in growing our business, but – most importantly – he touched our lives as well: he will be missed and dearly remembered.
