NY Paid Family Leave: Model Language for Employee Materials

New York State has released resources to help employers craft their employee materials for Paid Family Leave.  Under the new law, employers are required to inform their employees about their rights under Paid Family Leave by adding PFL to their employee handbook.  Employers that don’t have a handbook will still need to provide written guidance about PFL.

Download NY State’s “Model Language” PDF here.

We have a few tips on how you may wish to utilize this document:

  1. Don’t just give the whole document to your employees as is.  The PDF starts off with instructions for you as the employer and ends with sample model language for different examples.
  2. Don’t forget to add in your Paid Family Leave contacts on page 5.
  3. Don’t just copy and paste.  Read the examples and model language carefully.  The model language under each example doesn’t factor in the different scenarios in those examples.  So please keep the different scenarios and your internal policies in mind when crafting your specific employee guidance.
  4. These materials are not offered, nor should be construed, as legal advice.  It is strongly recommended that you consult with an appropriate professional to review your draft before distributing your final copy.

Any PFL information is as of the blog post’s date stamp; it is based on the applicable statutes and regulation,  and may change as regulations evolve or NY State issues guidance regarding Paid Family Leave regulations.
