The Department of Paid Family & Medical Leave (DFML) announced the 2023 maximum weekly benefit for Massachusetts PFML. As of January 1, 2023, the maximum weekly benefit will increase to $1,129.82 – up from $1,084.31 in 2022.
Earlier this month, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts had already released the updated State Average Weekly Wage (SAWW), which will be set at $1765.34 and used to calculate the 2023 weekly Paid Family & Medical Leave benefit.
How do you calculate the weekly benefit for 2023?
The weekly PFML benefit is made up of two factors, capped at the Maximum Weekly Benefit.
Weekly Benefit Calculation:
- 80% of the portion of the employee's average weekly wage that is equal to or less than 50% of the State average weekly wage (SAWW),
- Plus, 50% of the portion of the employee's average weekly wage that is more than 50% of the SAWW.
- Capped at the Maximum Weekly Benefit, which, in 2023, is $1,129.82.
The SAWW is adjusted annually in October, and the DFML may adjust the maximum benefit cap on an annual basis at around the same time.
