NJ state released a rather surprising, significant rate decrease for both state-required coverages – Temporary Disability (TDI) and Family Leave Insurance (FLI). Brokers, employers, and insurers alike, will have to assess and determine how this impacts them and the New Jersey statutory market. The contribution percentage will drop to 0.14% from 0.47% for TDI and to 0.14% from 0.28% for FLI respectively based on the 2022 rate and taxable wage data released by the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development (LWD) on October 5, 2021.
With that, the 2022 maximum employee contribution for NJ Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) will be $212.66 per year.
The updated taxable wage base for employers will be set at $39,800 for 2022. While both the employer and employee contribute to Temporary Disability Insurance, for Family Leave Insurance, only the employee contributes to the program.
As a private plan, ShelterPoint provides a total rate for its Temporary Disability Insurance contributory plans, comprised of the employee contribution rate and employer contribution rate. To determine the employer rate for a ShelterPoint TDI plan, simply subtract the state-announced employee contribution rate from ShelterPoint’s total rate.
Also effective January 2022, Temporary Disability Insurance benefits provide 85% of the covered employee’s average weekly wage, capped at $993/week (70% of the state average weekly wage) for a maximum duration of 26 weeks in most cases. Read more about Temporary Disability Insurance here.
